Cards
Overview
Cards are a widely used payment method that allows customers to pay using credit or debit cards issued by participating financial institutions. Maya supports online and in-person card payments through major global card networks.
Supported Card Networks
Maya currently supports both credit and debit cards of the following global card networks:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- JCB
- American Express (AMEX)
BancNet, the National Interbank Network in the Philippines, is supported in Maya Terminal only.
How Customers Pay with Cards
Online Payments
Customers complete their purchase by entering their card details during checkout:
- First Name
- Last Name
- Card Number
- Expiry Date
- Card Verification Value (CVV)
Maya automatically identifies the card brand network from the entered card number and displays it at checkout.
Depending on the card issuer's security requirements, customers may be asked to complete additional cardholder authentication, such as a One-Time Password (OTP) sent via SMS or other authentication methods supported by the issuing bank.
In-Person Payments
For physical transactions, customers can pay using a card through a Maya Terminal by tapping a contactless card or inserting a chip card.
How Maya Processes Card Payments
Card transactions are routed through the applicable card network and authorized by the customer's issuing bank. Once approved, funds are settled to the merchant's designated settlement account according to the applicable settlement schedule.
The available card payment experience depends on the Maya product used.
Requirements
To accept card payments, you must:
- Have an active Maya merchant account
- Be enabled for card (scheme) acceptance
- Be approved for the card brands you intend to accept
Contact your Maya representative if card acceptance has not yet been enabled for your account.
Payment Flow
- The customer chooses to pay using a card.
- The customer presents their card for payment:
- Online: enters card details during checkout.
- In-person: taps or inserts their card at a Maya Terminal.
- Maya sends the transaction to the appropriate card network and issuing bank for authorization.
- If required, the cardholder completes additional verification by entering a PIN or signature based on the issuer’s and scheme’s security requirements.
- The issuing bank validates the transaction and returns an approval or decline response.
- Maya returns the payment result to the checkout experience or payment terminal.
- Approved transactions are settled through the applicable card network, and funds are deposited to the merchant according to the applicable settlement schedule.
